Like all Anchors ‘n’ Asteroids products, the images are hand drawn by Pearl Vinstein. Both designs come in a range of baby and child sizes and are shipping now!
About Anchors ‘n’ Asteroids
Anchors-n-Asteroids is a Southern California t-shirt line that champions a young girl’s creativity and DIY self-expression. Founded in 2018, this multi-generational, Los Angeles-based brand was developed by the dynamic mother-daughter duo of Gwynne and Pearl Vinstein, both of whom share a deep love of art and music as well as those who make it.
Created for both kids and kids-at-heart, Pearl, our Creative Director, has drawn the artwork for each one of our iconic portrait t-shirts by hand. As a young, emerging artist herself, she has an innate ability to capture the spark and the spirit of some of our favorite artists and pop icons, including David Bowie, Frida Kahlo, Kurt Cobain, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more.
Gwynne recalls, “ When Pearl was 6 years old, she drew a portrait of David Bowie and it was so awesome that in the back of my mind, I thought one day I’d really like to put that on a t-shirt and wear it! She kept drawing these super cool portraits of various people, artists, and musicians who inspired her so I kept saving them.”
“Then, when Pearl was 9, I decided to leave the corporate world as Trend Director for a popular fashion retailer and, by then, I had amassed a stack of her drawings, so together we came up with the brand concept and tagline: D is for David, and so on. Being the mother of a young daughter, I really wanted to empower Pearl’s sense of self-worth, give her the ability to make her own choices, and express her right to influence the many social changes happening in our world today. After working with a woman-run screen printing shop, we decided to test out our concept and launched our line at Pearl’s school’s annual craft fair. We received so much positive feedback and support. It was a huge success, so we decided to go for it!”
From these humble beginnings, Anchors-n-Asteroids was born. Over the past few years, the brand has grown by leaps and bounds to include kids’ t-shirts as well as infant and adult sizes. We are currently in over 100 boutiques and museums throughout the US and are looking to grow our footprint internationally. As Pearl’s (now a Pre-Teen) artistry evolves, we also look forward to our brand’s evolution.
At our core, our belief is in sustainable fashion that’s homegrown and timeless. Our shirts are American-made and sourced using the softest organic cotton and recycled fabrics. We donate 10% of the proceeds from our Save the Planet tee to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a United States-based 501 non-profit international environmental advocacy group.
